Comparing prediction market odds to sportsbook odds reveals how collective intelligence differs from traditional oddsmaking. Sportsbooks typically set lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, aiming to balance risk and attract bets. This market, however, reflects the aggregated predictions of a diverse group of traders. Often, prediction markets can offer more accurate forecasts, especially when information is dispersed and not fully captured by sportsbook models. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information access, biases, or simply the wisdom of the crowd effect. Observing these differences can be insightful for both bettors and analysts.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market depth—the number of shares available at different price points—indicates the liquidity and potential for price movement. This dynamic pricing allows the market to efficiently incorporate new information and adjust probabilities in real-time, driven by trader activity.
