Prediction market odds often reflect a different set of information and incentives than those found at traditional sportsbooks. While sportsbooks primarily consider statistical analysis and expert opinions, this market incorporates the wisdom of the crowd, allowing for a broader range of factors to influence pricing. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially early in the market’s life cycle, as prediction markets can quickly adjust to new information or shifts in sentiment. These differences can present opportunities for arbitrage, if they exist.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous double auction, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price fluctuates, reflecting the collective intelligence of the crowd. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand for shares, creating a dynamic and responsive pricing mechanism.
