Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those offered by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance their risk and ensure profit, incorporating a 'vig' or commission. This market, driven by the collective wisdom of traders, attempts to determine the *true* probability of each outcome. Discrepancies can arise from differing information sources, biases, or simply varying levels of expertise among bettors and market participants. It’s common to see prediction markets offer more accurate probabilities, especially when a large volume of traders participate.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. As more shares are traded, the price of each share adjusts, reflecting the collective assessment of the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price movement is driven by supply and demand; if many traders believe Kartal will win, the price of shares representing her victory will increase, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust probabilities.
