Currently, prediction market odds often reflect a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set initial lines based on expert analysis and team/player statistics, incorporating a margin for profit. This market, however, is driven by the collective wisdom of traders who may consider a wider range of factors, including news, social sentiment, and even subjective assessments. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information access or varying interpretations of the same data. It’s common to see prediction markets adjust more rapidly to new information than sportsbooks, potentially offering a more dynamic assessment of the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a specific outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The platform uses a constant product market maker model, meaning the product of the liquidity for each outcome remains constant, influencing price movements based on trading activity. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the aggregated beliefs of all participants.
