Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. If a significant number of people believe a sportsbook is mispricing a competitor, they can express that view by trading on Polymarket, potentially driving the odds closer to what the crowd perceives as the true probability. It's common to see discrepancies, especially before a significant amount of volume is traded.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, ultimately determining the implied probability of each competitor winning. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more shares purchased for a particular competitor, the higher their price rises, and the greater the implied probability becomes. This dynamic pricing reflects the collective intelligence of the traders participating in this market.
