Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines to balance action, while this market’s prices are driven purely by traders willing to buy or sell based on their own analysis. If a significant discrepancy exists between the two, arbitrage opportunities may arise, where traders can profit by simultaneously betting on both. However, it’s important to note that sportsbooks and this market have different costs and constraints, which can explain some of the differences.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different exact scores. The price of each share reflects the market’s probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price of a share indicates the implied probability of that exact score being the final result of the Western Sydney Wanderers vs. Auckland FC match. Volume plays a key role in price discovery here.
