Generally, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbook odds are often set by analysts and can be influenced by factors like public betting patterns and the sportsbook’s own risk management. This market, however, is driven by individuals trading based on their own research and beliefs. While there can be alignment, differences often emerge as prediction markets can incorporate a wider range of information and adapt more quickly to new developments. It’s useful to compare both to form a well-rounded view.
On Kalshi, this market is priced through a continuous order book where traders buy and sell contracts representing each possible outcome. The price of a contract reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more people buy contracts for a particular team, the price increases, indicating a higher perceived chance of victory. Conversely, selling contracts drives the price down. This dynamic pricing mechanism ensures that the market odds constantly adjust to reflect the latest information and collective intelligence of the traders.
