Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds which can be influenced by factors like house biases or initial public perception. Sportsbooks typically set lines to balance betting action and ensure profit, while this market allows traders to directly express their beliefs about the probability of each outcome. If there's a significant discrepancy, it could indicate that the crowd believes a different result is more likely than the sportsbook anticipates, or that information not yet fully incorporated into sportsbook lines is present in the prediction market. It's a fascinating comparison to observe.
On Kalshi, this market is priced through a continuous order book, where traders buy and sell contracts representing each possible outcome. The price of a contract reflects the market’s assessment of the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy contracts for a particular team, the price increases, and the implied probability of that team winning rises. On Kalshi, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market dynamically adjusts as new information becomes available and traders update their beliefs, creating a constantly evolving reflection of expectations for the West Virginia vs Iowa State game’s first half winner.
