Prediction market odds, like those found on Polymarket and Kalshi for this market, often differ from traditional sportsbook odds due to the underlying mechanisms of price discovery. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, incorporating a profit margin. In contrast, prediction markets rely on the collective intelligence of traders who buy and sell contracts representing different outcomes. This market’s pricing reflects the aggregated beliefs of these participants, potentially leading to more accurate probabilities, especially as the event approaches. However, liquidity – the volume of trading – can impact how closely these odds align.
Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. Prices on Polymarket and Kalshi may diverge due to several factors, including differing user bases, trading fees, and market-specific rules. Each platform attracts a unique set of traders with varying expertise and risk tolerance, which can influence their predictions. Furthermore, the liquidity of this market can vary between the two platforms, impacting price discovery. Any differences in how each platform handles order types or allows for hedging strategies can also contribute to price discrepancies. These factors mean that while both platforms track the same event, their prices may not always be identical.
