Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply a larger sample size of opinions contributing to the prediction market price. It's common to see this market adjust rapidly to new information, potentially leading to odds that diverge from, or converge with, traditional sportsbook offerings.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price fluctuates, reflecting the evolving consensus. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand for shares, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of the match’s likely result.
