Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective compared to traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often include a 'vig' or commission, impacting the implied probability. This market, driven by collective intelligence, aims to represent the true probability of an event occurring. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis, prediction markets can quickly adjust as new information and diverse opinions enter the system. Discrepancies can arise due to varying levels of information available to each, or differing risk appetites among bettors.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information emerges, the price fluctuates, providing a dynamic assessment of the event’s likelihood. The current price is determined by supply and demand, with higher demand driving up the price and vice versa. This creates a real-time probability estimate.
