Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbook odds are typically set by a small team of experts, while this market allows anyone to participate and express their beliefs about the outcome. Therefore, differences can arise due to varying information, analytical approaches, and biases. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before significant events or when new information emerges, as the crowd incorporates factors that sportsbooks may not immediately account for. Analyzing these differences can be valuable for informed decision-making.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the event’s potential results. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s depth and volume influence how efficiently the price reflects new information. Traders aim to profit by identifying discrepancies between their own predictions and the market price, effectively betting on their analysis.
