Prediction market odds often differ from traditional sportsbook odds due to the wisdom of the crowd effect. Sportsbooks set initial lines based on their own analysis, while this market allows a larger, more diverse group of participants to express their beliefs about the outcome. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is mispricing a player’s chances, the odds on Polymarket will adjust accordingly. This can lead to more accurate predictions, as the market aggregates information from many sources, though discrepancies can still occur based on differing information or risk assessments.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price fluctuates based on supply and demand; if more people buy shares of a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds reflect the collective intelligence of the traders on Polymarket.
