Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their odds based on models and expert analysis, while this market is driven by the collective predictions of many individual traders. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply the dynamic nature of both types of markets. It’s common to see prediction market probabilities shift more rapidly in response to news or changing sentiment than sportsbook odds, as the market is continuously updating.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of each player winning. As more traders buy shares in a particular player, the price increases, indicating a higher perceived chance of victory. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket, and is not influenced by external factors or predetermined formulas.
