Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on models and their own risk assessment, while this market aggregates the views of many individuals. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply variations in opinion. It’s common to see prediction markets move independently of sportsbook odds, especially as new information becomes available or as the event draws closer. Comparing the two can be a useful exercise in understanding different perspectives on the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of each share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price reflects the aggregate sentiment of all participants, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of the event's probability. This differs from fixed-odds betting, as the odds adjust based on demand.
