Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from initial sportsbook odds due to the influence of public sentiment and information aggregation. Sportsbooks set lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to trade based on their own insights. Discrepancies can arise from differing levels of information available to each group, or simply from the dynamic nature of trading as new information emerges. It's common to see prediction markets converge towards the 'true' probability as the event approaches, potentially offering value compared to traditional betting options.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by supply and demand. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Traders are incentivized to provide accurate predictions, as profitable trades are rewarded. The current implied probability of a particular player winning is visible in the market price, and this fluctuates based on trading activity and new information entering the market. This creates a dynamic and responsive pricing system.
