Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on expert analysis and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows traders to express their own beliefs. If a significant discrepancy emerges between the two, arbitrage opportunities may arise. However, it’s important to note that prediction market odds are driven by supply and demand, and can be influenced by factors not explicitly considered by sportsbooks, such as information asymmetry or unique insights held by traders.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by trader activity and the forces of supply and demand, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of the event’s likelihood. This allows for a fluid and responsive pricing system.
