Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of bettors, potentially differing from those set by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market is driven by participants directly expressing their beliefs about the outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply varying levels of expertise among market participants compared to sportsbook analysts. It’s common to see prediction markets react more quickly to new information than sportsbooks, as the price adjusts with each trade.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event's likelihood. The market’s price is determined purely by supply and demand among traders on the platform.
