Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, but may also incorporate a profit margin. This market, however, is driven by traders who are incentivized to accurately predict the outcome, potentially leading to more efficient price discovery. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or risk appetites between prediction market participants and sportsbook customers. It's common to see prediction markets react more quickly to new information than sportsbooks.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of each outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price fluctuates based on supply and demand, driven by new information and changing opinions among traders. This dynamic pricing allows for a real-time assessment of the event’s likelihood, as perceived by the market participants.
