Often, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, representing their profit margin. This market, being driven by user predictions, can sometimes provide more accurate probabilities, as the collective wisdom of the crowd can be quite effective. However, sportsbooks have access to different information, such as injury reports and team news, which may not be immediately reflected in the prediction market. It's valuable to compare both to gain a comprehensive view.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts accordingly, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of the event’s potential results. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand for these shares.
