Often, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on statistical models and public perception, while this market reflects the collective wisdom of traders who are incentivized to be accurate. If a significant discrepancy exists, arbitrage opportunities may arise, where traders can profit by betting on both platforms. However, it’s important to remember that prediction markets are forward-looking, incorporating new information as it becomes available, potentially leading to odds that diverge from initial sportsbook offerings.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a specific player, the price of those shares increases, reflecting a higher implied probability of that player winning. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price movements are driven by supply and demand, and the market efficiently aggregates the information and opinions of all participants. The current trading volume indicates the level of interest and conviction surrounding the potential outcomes.
