Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market is driven by real-money trading and the aggregated predictions of individuals. It's common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before a significant amount of volume is traded. These differences can arise from varying levels of information, biases, or simply different interpretations of the available data. Observing these differences can be valuable for informed decision-making.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The platform uses a constant product formula to ensure that the total liquidity in the market remains constant, influencing price movements based on supply and demand. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust expectations.
