Prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, potentially differing from sportsbook odds which can be influenced by factors like house bias or promotional offers. Sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis, but prediction markets allow a broader range of participants to weigh in, potentially leading to more accurate probabilities as the event approaches. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially when significant public sentiment exists that isn’t fully captured by traditional oddsmakers. This market allows for a different kind of assessment of the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the collective intelligence of the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price fluctuates based on supply and demand; if more traders believe Ayana Akli will win, the price of shares representing her victory will increase, and vice versa for Hina Inoue. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the most up-to-date expectations.
