Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set initial lines based on their own analysis, incorporating factors like player statistics and expert opinions. However, this market allows anyone to trade, so the odds can shift rapidly as new information becomes available and more people participate. Often, prediction markets are more accurate than traditional forecasts, especially when there's strong public interest and active trading. It’s common to see discrepancies, particularly before the event gains widespread attention.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice-versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market is entirely driven by supply and demand; there are no external factors influencing the price beyond the actions of traders on the platform. This creates a dynamic and responsive pricing system.
