Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines to balance action and ensure profit, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individuals. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook’s odds are inaccurate, they can express that view through their trades, potentially driving the prediction market price in a different direction. This can result in prediction market odds being more accurate, especially when considering information not fully priced into traditional odds.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price fluctuates based on supply and demand; increased buying pressure raises the price, indicating growing confidence in that outcome, while selling pressure lowers it. This dynamic pricing allows for a constantly updated assessment of probabilities.
