Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is mispricing an outcome, they can take the opposite position in this market, driving the odds closer to what they perceive as the true probability. It's common to see discrepancies, particularly before substantial betting activity occurs in both venues.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different outcomes. The price of each share reflects the market's collective assessment of the probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the prices adjust dynamically, providing a real-time estimate of expectations. The market's efficiency depends on the number of participants and the quality of information they incorporate into their trading decisions.
