Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of participants, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market relies on the aggregated predictions of individuals trading on Polymarket. It's common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before significant events or when there’s a lot of uncertainty surrounding the outcome. These differences can present opportunities for arbitrage, where traders attempt to profit from the mispricing between the two types of markets.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a specific outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of each share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, with the total value of all shares summing to 1. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective intelligence of the traders participating in this market.
