Generally, prediction market odds tend to reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often proving more accurate than traditional sportsbook odds, particularly as an event approaches. Sportsbooks may incorporate biases or seek to profit from public perception, while this market aggregates the views of informed traders. However, discrepancies can occur due to differing levels of liquidity and the specific information factored into each pricing mechanism. It’s common to see initial sportsbook lines move closer to the prediction market price as more information becomes available and trading volume increases.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price fluctuates based on supply and demand; increased buying pressure raises the price, indicating growing confidence in a particular outcome, while selling pressure lowers it. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the most up-to-date collective intelligence.
