Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and need to account for profit margins, while this market is driven purely by participants’ beliefs about the outcome. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially when there's significant public interest or disagreement about the likely winner. Examining these differences can reveal where the crowd believes there’s value, compared to the sportsbook’s assessment.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous exchange mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, effectively creating a real-time probability assessment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders believe an outcome is likely, the higher the share price will rise, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing reflects the aggregated predictions of all participants in the market, offering a unique perspective on the event’s potential result.
