Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs, potentially leading to odds that incorporate a wider range of information and perspectives. Discrepancies can arise due to differing opinions on player form, injury risks, or even intangible factors. It's common to see prediction markets react more quickly to new information than traditional sportsbooks, as the price adjusts with each trade.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, reflecting growing confidence. Conversely, selling pressure drives the price down. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants trading on Polymarket.
