Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set odds based on their own models and risk assessment, while this market relies on individuals freely trading based on their own information and beliefs. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before a significant amount of trading occurs. These differences can arise from varying levels of information access, biases, or simply differing interpretations of available data. Examining both can provide a more comprehensive view of expected outcomes.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular player, the price increases, reflecting growing confidence in their victory. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price dynamically adjusts based on supply and demand, providing a real-time assessment of the perceived probabilities by those participating in the market. This creates a fluid and responsive pricing system.
