Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market aggregates the views of many individual bettors. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply the dynamic nature of prediction markets as new information becomes available. It’s common to see differences in implied probabilities between this market and sportsbook offerings, especially as the event approaches.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of each share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by supply and demand. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a specific player, the price increases, indicating a growing expectation of their victory. Conversely, selling pressure lowers the price, suggesting a decreasing belief in their chances. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust probabilities accordingly.
