Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook has mispriced the outcome, the odds on Polymarket will adjust accordingly. This dynamic can lead to prediction market odds being more accurate, particularly as the event approaches and more information becomes available. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially early on.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a specific outcome. As more shares are purchased for a particular outcome, the price of those shares increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price movement is driven entirely by supply and demand, with traders acting as both market makers and speculators. This creates a dynamic pricing system that attempts to reflect the collective intelligence of the participants trading on Polymarket.
