Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines to balance action, while this market allows traders to continuously update their beliefs based on new information. If prediction market participants strongly disagree with sportsbook lines, the odds here will diverge. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially as new developments emerge that aren’t fully priced into sportsbook offerings. Analyzing these differences can provide valuable insights into where the market perceives an edge.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of each outcome. As more shares are purchased for a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the perceived chance of that outcome occurring, allowing traders to express their views and profit if their predictions are accurate. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of its participants.
