Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, but may also incorporate a profit margin. This market, driven by traders on Polymarket, can quickly adjust to new information and potentially offer more accurate probabilities as more people participate and share their insights. Discrepancies can arise due to differing opinions, access to information, or simply the dynamics of each venue. It’s always worth comparing both to inform your decisions.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each player winning. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular player, the price increases, indicating a growing expectation of their victory. Conversely, selling pressure lowers the price. This dynamic process ensures the market odds continuously adapt to new information and collective sentiment.
