Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome, leading to odds that can diverge from those offered by sportsbooks. These differences can arise from varying levels of information, biases, or simply differing interpretations of the same data. It’s useful to compare the two to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the potential results.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares fluctuates based on supply and demand, directly reflecting the collective probability assigned to each player winning. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders believe a player will win, the higher the price of shares related to that player will climb, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds are constantly updated to reflect the latest information and sentiment.
