Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, but may also incorporate a margin for profit. This market, driven by traders on Polymarket, represents a collective forecast. If a significant discrepancy exists between the two, opportunities for arbitrage may emerge, as traders attempt to profit from the difference. It’s common to see prediction markets adjust more rapidly to new information than sportsbooks.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a specific outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, with the platform ensuring the total probability across all outcomes sums to 100%. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust expectations.
