Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks often set initial lines to balance betting action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows traders to freely adjust probabilities based on their own analysis and information. It's common to see discrepancies, especially as new information emerges or public sentiment shifts. Comparing these odds to those offered by sportsbooks can provide a valuable perspective on where the market finds value and how it differs from expert opinions.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price fluctuates based on supply and demand; if more traders believe a particular player will win, the price of shares representing that outcome will increase, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds continually adapt to new information and trader sentiment.
