Often, prediction market odds reflect a 'wisdom of the crowd' that can differ from traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market aggregates the opinions of many individual traders. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook has mispriced an outcome, they can influence the odds on Polymarket to more accurately reflect the true probability. However, sportsbook odds can also incorporate factors not fully captured by traders in this market, such as team news or injuries, leading to discrepancies.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a specific player, the price of those shares increases, reflecting growing confidence in their victory. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome, allowing traders to express their views and profit if their predictions are accurate. The market's price is determined entirely by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket.
