Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. If a significant number of informed bettors believe a sportsbook has mispriced an outcome, they can express that view by trading on Polymarket. This can lead to odds discrepancies, and potentially opportunities for arbitrage. It's common to see prediction markets incorporate information and adjust more quickly than sportsbooks, especially for niche events.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a specific outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of each share directly corresponds to the perceived chance of that outcome occurring. The market’s price is driven entirely by supply and demand, making it a dynamic representation of collective intelligence. This allows for a fluid and responsive pricing model, unlike fixed-odds betting.
