Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from initial sportsbook lines. Sportsbooks set odds based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. If a significant number of people believe a sportsbook has mispriced an outcome, the prediction market may move in the opposite direction. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before a lot of money flows into either market, as information and opinions evolve.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing different outcomes. The price of each share reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more shares are bought for a particular outcome, its price increases, and the probability rises accordingly. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price movements are driven by supply and demand, influenced by news, analysis, and the overall sentiment of traders participating in this market.
