Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and incorporate a profit margin, while this market is driven purely by traders' willingness to buy or sell. If sportsbook odds suggest a clear favorite, this market might show a more nuanced view, especially if there's significant uncertainty or debate surrounding the players' form. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information access or varying levels of expertise among bettors and traders.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for one outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the collective intelligence of the market participants. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date information and expectations.
