Typically, prediction market odds reflect a different set of information and incentives than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while prediction markets aim to represent the true probability of an event as determined by traders. Therefore, this market’s odds may differ from those offered by sportsbooks, potentially offering value to informed bettors who identify discrepancies. It’s common to see prediction markets outperform sportsbooks in accuracy, as they benefit from a wider range of participants and a focus on collective intelligence.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and the implied probability rises. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price reflects the aggregated wisdom of the crowd, and is constantly adjusting based on new information and trading activity. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market remains a relatively efficient predictor of the event's outcome.
