Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbook odds are typically set by professional oddsmakers, while this market is driven by individual participants. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially early on, as prediction markets can incorporate information and analysis that sportsbooks might not immediately consider. However, as the event approaches, the odds on Polymarket and sportsbook lines often converge, reflecting a shared understanding of the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a specific outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event's potential results, based on the information available to traders.
