Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market's odds are driven by actual money being wagered. Therefore, discrepancies can arise due to differing information or biases. It’s common to see prediction markets react more quickly to new information, such as injuries or changes in form, potentially leading to odds that diverge from those offered by sportsbooks. Examining both can provide a more comprehensive view of the expected outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand, meaning traders collectively determine the odds based on their individual assessments and available information. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the most up-to-date expectations.
