Prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, incorporating a profit margin. This market, however, is driven by individuals wagering their own capital, theoretically leading to more accurate probabilities as more information becomes available. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information access, biases, or simply the dynamics of each venue. It’s common to see prediction markets move more quickly to incorporate new information than sportsbooks.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome of the Seville tennis match. As more shares are purchased for a particular outcome, the price of those shares increases, reflecting a higher probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. The market’s price is entirely determined by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket, and reflects their collective assessment of the players' chances of winning.
