Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own analysis and incorporate a profit margin, while this market allows traders to express their own informed opinions. If a significant discrepancy exists between this market and sportsbook odds, it could indicate that traders possess information not yet fully priced into the sportsbook lines, or simply have different risk assessments. It is important to compare the probabilities implied by both to form a well-rounded view.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, reflecting a higher perceived probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current implied probability of a particular player winning is reflected in the share price, and traders adjust their positions based on new information and their own analysis of the match.
