Prediction market odds often reflect a different kind of wisdom than sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market represents the aggregate belief of informed traders. Often, prediction markets can be more accurate forecasts, especially when a significant amount of volume is traded. However, sportsbook odds provide a useful benchmark for comparison, and discrepancies can highlight potential value in either market. It’s important to consider that sportsbooks may have different information or biases influencing their lines.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. As more shares are traded, the price adjusts to reflect the collective sentiment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of the outcome it represents; a share trading at 70 means there's a 70% implied probability of that outcome occurring. This dynamic pricing ensures the market remains responsive to new information and changing perceptions.
