Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on their own analysis, aiming to balance action on both sides, while this market allows anyone to trade and express their beliefs. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook’s odds are inaccurate, they can take positions in this market that push the price towards their assessment. This dynamic can lead to prediction market odds being more accurate, or simply reflecting a different perspective than traditional betting outlets.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to find an equilibrium point. This means the market price isn’t determined by a single entity, but rather by the collective intelligence and risk appetite of all participants. The current price reflects the aggregated forecast of all traders.
