Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, incorporating a profit margin. This market, however, is driven by individuals freely trading based on their own analysis and information. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is mispricing the match, they can express that view by trading in a way that moves the odds on Polymarket. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information access or varying interpretations of the same data.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more shares bought for a particular outcome, the higher its price rises, indicating increased confidence. Conversely, selling shares lowers the price, suggesting decreasing confidence. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all traders involved in the Penickova vs Ma match.
